Introduced in 1988, the Reference 16520 marked a defining moment for the Daytona, bringing automatic winding to Rolexs chronograph for the first time. Powered by the heavily modified Zenith El Primero-based calibre 4030, the reference would remain in production until 2000, bridging the gap between the manually wound Daytonas of the past and the fully in-house generation that followed.
This example is particularly notable for its Tiffany & Co. signed black dial, a vestige of the longstanding relationship between Rolex and the famed American retailer. The additional signature sits beneath the traditional Rolex text, complemented by contrasting white-ringed registers and the red DAYTONA designation at six oclock.
Its A-series serial number places it among the final examples of the Reference 16520, produced shortly before the introduction of the Reference 116520. The watch is preserved with its original Rolex hangtag and original green caseback sticker, the latter an increasingly uncommon detail to find intact.
Combining a late-production Zenith-era Daytona with the desirable Tiffany & Co. signature and unusually well-preserved original accessories, this is a compelling example from the closing chapter of one of Rolexs most important chronographs.
